Palestinian rights activists join BDS Global Day of Action commemorating Land Day

March 31, 2012 by Palestinian BDS National Committee

- Over 50 actions held across 23 countries
- BDS Global Day of Action follows biggest ever Israeli Apartheid Week
- As solidarity with Palestinian political prisoners spreads, G4S is targeted over its involvement in Israeli prisons

Occupied Palestine, 31 March 2012 – Supporters of Palestinian rights across the world have taken action in support of the campaign for boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel until it complies with international law to mark Palestinian Land Day on March 30.

Land Day, the day of Palestinian resistance in commemoration of the killings during the 1976 protests against Israeli land confiscation, was marked in Palestine with demonstrations and marches on Jerusalem. In addition to the Global March to Jerusalem, the day saw international mobilization for the fourth annual BDS Global Day of Action. Over 50 actions took place in 23 countries.

Just days before Palestinians marched on Jerusalem to protest against Israel’s illegal annexation and closure of the occupied city, campaigners in Hastings, UK, announced that they had successfully pressured local government officials to exclude Veolia from a public tender. Veolia helped to construct and now operates the Jerusalem Light Rail, a key infrastructure project in support of the Israeli colonisation of occupied East Jerusalem. Veolia has lost more than US$13 billion in contracts following BDS campaigns around the world and has been forced to admit the financial damage the campaign is causing it.

The Day of Action took place against a backdrop of inspiring resistance and hunger strikes from Palestinian political prisoners. In Denmark and Sweden, meetings were held and actions were taken on Land Day in support of the campaign against G4S, the private security company that is contracted to provide equipment to Israeli prisons.

Other highlights included:

- A letter published by leading UK actors, directors and writers in The Guardian challenging a prominent theatre over its invitation of the Israeli National Theatre

- The announcement that National Movímíento Estudíantíl Chícan@ de Aztlán (M.E.Ch.A), the largest association of Latino youth in the US, voted to support BDS in a landslide ballot. March 30 is also annual César Chávez Day, which honours the inspiring American civil rights, Latino and farm labour leader who mobilized for the rights of the oppressed using boycotts and other tactics.

- A Twitter action which saw the hashtag #BDSIsrael trend globally for more than an hour and an online call for @Macys to drop the sales of Israeli settlements products Ahava and SodaStream.

- Actions at retailers that stock Israeli goods across Australia, France, Germany, the UK, the US

- Street theatre and BDS shout-outs in Ireland, Australia and Poland and BDS banners on demonstrations across the world

These actions show once again the truly global growth of the BDS movement and its effectiveness to hold Israel accountable for persistent violations of international law and oppression of the Palestinian people.

During the week leading up to the Day of Action, Africa’s largest trade union federation – ITUC-Africa – representing 15 million workers from 56 African trade union federations in 45 countries passed a resolution calling for the “active participation and intensification of the implementation of the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel, including a boycott of Israeli goods and the immediate ending of diplomatic relations between African countries and Israel.”

BDS hit the mainstream in the US when the New York Times and other large media outlets reported on the Park Slope food co-op vote on BDS, a major Norwegian retailer announced a decision to stop selling products from illegal Israeli settlements and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd spoke of his support for the World Social Forum Free Palestine, due to take place in Brazil in November 2012.

The Day of Action followed the largest ever Israeli Apartheid Week, an annual series of events at universities that raise awareness of the analysis of Israel as an apartheid state and builds the BDS movement. IAW took place in 116 cities around the world, including in Palestine and across the Arab world.

40 Days of Hana Shalabi’s Hunger Strike: Appeal Denied, Take Action Today

Hana al-Shalabi has been held under administrative detention without charge or trial since her re-arrest on February 16, 2012 and has maintained a continuous hunger strike since that date, inspiring international solidarity and action. Today, March 26, marks the 40th day of hunger strike – and also a new decision handed down by an Israeli court denying her appeal of her administrative detention sentence.
Not only did the judge refuse to consider Shalabi’s ill-treatment and torture, according to Addameer, “In his decision, the military judge disregarded Ms. Shalabi’s critical medical condition; rather, he stated that she is responsible for her own recovery.”
Administrative detention dates from the British Emergency Law of 1945 under the British Mandate of Palestine. It allows the Israeli occupation to detain Palestinians for up to six months at a time without charge or trial, on the basis of secret evidence not disclosed to either the accused person or his or her lawyer, and can be renewed indefinitely. There are 320 Palestinians currently held under administrative detention, including a number of members of the Palestinian Legislative Council, and some have been held for over four years. Hana Shalabi is one of 4,637 Palestinian political prisoners in the jails of the Israeli occupation, 30 of whom continue to be held in isolation, from Palestinian national leaders and Palestinian children – all of whom are demanding freedom. Within Israeli jails, hunger strikes are spreading as 24 prisoners continue open-ended strikes and a prison system wide one-day strike was held on March 24.
Download cards for use in Canada and the US to publicize Hana Shalabi’s case.
Hana al-Shalabi’s current imprisonment began only four months after her release from over two years of administrative detention without charge or trial on October 18, 2011, a release secured in a prisoner exchange negotiated by the Palestinian resistance. During her hunger strike, her health has grown progressively worse; she was visited today by a doctor from Physicians for Human Rights, who reported “stated that Ms. Shalabi’s muscle atrophy and wasting have increased, which now includes her heart muscle. Ms. Shalabi still refuses nutrition aside from vitamins and salts in her water and is in danger of death.”
The Israeli occupation is entirely responsible for the life and health of Hana al-Shalabi. In the past few days, pickets, mobilizations and demonstrations have been held in New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Glasgow, Chicago, Derry, Belfast, and London. Amnesty International has issued a new appeal calling for Hana’s release – however, many other human rights organizations have maintained complete silence even as Hana Shalabi’s hunger strike reaches its 40th day.
More action is urgently needed to mobilize global support for Hana al-Shalabi as her health worsens and her appeals are denied, to support her steadfast struggle for her freedom, the freedom of Palestinian political prisoners and the freedom of Palestine.

Dozens of US Campaign Member Groups Participate in 2012 Israeli Apartheid Week!

IAW logoTwo weeks ago, activists from US Campaign member groups and other organizations joined organizers in 115 cities worldwide for the 8th Annual Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW)!

From Olympia, WA to New Brunswick, NJ; from Burlington to Boston; US Campaign member groups in more than a dozen U.S. cities held IAW actions and events during the global week of action to educate people about the nature of Israel as an apartheid state and to build campaigns for boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) against Israel.

Exposing Israel's apartheid policies and challenging corporations that profit from the Israeli occupation are central to the US Campaign's mission of ending U.S. institutional support for the Israeli occupation and promoting freedom, justice, and equality.

The actions -- including guerrilla theater, mock walls, mock checkpoints, new billboards, walk-outs, and street theater -- and participating cities are too many to name here. (For a complete list of participating cities and their activities, visit the official IAW website.)

Here is just a small sampling of some of the inspiring, creative actions and events by US Campaign coalition member groups and others around the country:

Students at Antioch University
Above: Students at Antioch University set up a mock checkpoint with signs reading "Palestinians Stop" and "Israelis (and everyone else) Pass."
Students at Antioch University in Seattle and the University of California (UC) at Berkeley erected mock Israeli checkpoints, while students at Boston University, Brandeis University, Rutgers University, the University of Pennsylvania, and beyond constructedmock Israeli apartheid walls on their campuses.

At the University of Minnesota, Students for Justice in Palestine joined community members working on the Minnesota Break the Bonds campaign at a "Visualizing Inequality" event, where they served different sides of the room a different quality and quantity of food to represent the inequality of resources and quality of life between Israeli and Palestinian families under Israel's apartheid laws.

Students at UCLA and UC Irvine staged peaceful and powerful walk-outs from presentations by Israeli soldiers organized to counter IAW.

Above: Click to view a marching band, mock wall, and street theater protesting Batsheva Dance Co.
More than a hundred activists protested performances by the Israeli Batsheva Dance Company in San Francisco and New York City with banners, guerrilla theater, marching bands and street theater, calling attention to the dance troupe's role in theBrand Israel campaign to whitewash Israeli apartheid.

The Seattle Middle East Awareness Campaign launched a series of advertisements on local King County Metro buses with billboards calling for equal rights for Palestinians.

These actions came on the heels of film screenings, protestspanel discussions, and so much more that happened across the country earlier this month.

But it's not over yet! If your US Campaign member group did not get to take part in IAW, or if you want to build on your IAW activities, remember that the Global BDS Day of Action is right around the corner on March 30th, Palestinian Land Day!

This year, Land Day happens to fall on César Chávez Day, commemorating the late Americanfarmworker and civil rights activist. This coincidence presents a wonderful opportunity for US Campaign organizations to connect the struggles and tactics (including boycotts) of farmers and workers who have advocated for justice from grape orchards in the United States to olive groves in Palestine.

Click here for more information and ideas for taking action on Land Day, and be sure to send the US Campaign your photos, links, videos, and reports back!

Inside Dome of the Rock Model

Windows of Dome of the Rock

Female detainee on hunger strike moved to isolation

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- Female detainee Hana Shalabi has been moved to solitary confinement as a punishment for her hunger strike action, a lawyer from the Ministry of Detainees said Monday.

Shireen Iraqi said that Hasharon prison authorities have moved Shalabi into isolation. Her health is deterioting, Iraqi said, adding that Shalabi has not been medically examined since she went on strike.

Hana Shalabi, from the northern West Bank village Burqin, is being held without charge since her detention on Feb. 16. She announced her hunger strike immediately after soldiers seized her from the family's Jenin-district home.

Shalabi said through her lawyer that she is not afraid of death and will continue to refuse administrative detention.

Shalabi was freed in October 2011 when Hamas secured the release of more than 1,000 Palestinians in Israeli jails in exchange for a captured Israeli soldier.

She had spent 25 months in administrative detention, under procedures that allow Israel to detain Palestinians for renewable terms of six months without pressing charges, using laws dating back to the British Mandate period.

Four months later, Shalabi found herself back in jail using the same detention orders. Three other detainees released under the same deal were re-arrested by Israeli forces last week.

Israel is holding 309 Palestinians in administrative detention, according to figures by prisoners rights group Addameer. There are currently six Palestinian woman in Israeli custody.

Injured protester 'dies in surgery'

RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Medics say a Palestinian protester died Friday during surgery after being shot during clashes with the Israeli army near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

Talat Ramia, 25, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and five others were injured, medics at the Palestine Medical Complex said. Ramia died during emergency surgery, they said.

Israeli forces were seen firing tear gas and both live and rubber bullets at the protesters gathering near the Qalandia checkpoint after hearing rumors of a raid on a holy site in Jerusalem.

An Israeli military spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock

Al-Aqsa Mosque Minaret

Al-Aqsa Mosque Dome

ACTION ALERT: PALESTINIAN CHILDREN HELD IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT

Posted By: THE PALESTINE RIGHT TO RETURN COALITION
To: Members in 11 Causes

According to Defense Children International, in October and November 2011, at least four Palestinian children were held in solitary confinement by the Israeli occupation army for between 3 and 24 days.
To read the story of Rasheed J. who was held in solitary confinement, go here:http://links.causes.com/s/clBbP0
On 18 October 2011, the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture called for an end to the practice of solitary  confinement as well as a complete ban on its use for juveniles. "Considering the severe mental pain or suffering solitary confinement may cause,"
Mr. Méndez warned, "it can amount to torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment when used as a punishment, during pretrial detention, indefinitely or for a prolonged period, for persons with mental disabilities or juveniles." (See report to the General Assembly - http://links.causes.com/s/clBbP7)
ACTION
Please write to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hilary Clinton to demand that they direct the state of Israel to immediately cease all targeted arrests of Palestinian children, and to release all Palestinian children from its prisons including those held in solitary confinement. The US administration must demand an immediate end to all forms of institutionalized and systematic abuse of Palestinian children by the state of Israel. The US government, which supports Israel to the tune of billions of taxpayer dollars a year while most ordinary Americans are suffering in a very bad economy, is bound by its laws and international conventions to cut off all aid to Israel until it ends all of its violations of human rights and basic freedoms in a verifiable manner.

Al-Aqsa Mosque, Jerusalem, Palestine

Al-Masjid El-Aqsa is an Arabic name which means the Farthest Mosque. To understand its name, and its importance, it must be remembered that the roots of Islam began in the Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabia today).

Ten years after the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) received his first revelation, he made a miraculous night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and to the Seven Heavens on a white flying horse called Al-Buraq El-Sharif. During his interval in Jerusalem, the Prophet stopped to pray at the rock (now covered by the golden Dome), and was given the commandment to pray five times a day.
Today, Muslims throughout the World use Mecca as the direction of prayers (Qibla). However, for 16½ months following the Prophet Mohammad's miraculous journey, Jerusalem was the Qibla.

Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock

During Prophet Mohammad's life (pbuh), he instructed Muslims to visit not only the mosque where they lived in Mecca, but also the 'Farthest mosque' from them which lay 2000 kilometers north, in Jerusalem. Hence the name Al-Masjid El-Aqsa, or Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is the second oldest mosque in Islam after the Ka'ba in Mecca, and is third in holiness and importance after the mosques in Mecca and Medina.
The rectangular Al-Aqsa Mosque is 144,000 square meters, 35 acres, or 1/6 of the entire area within the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem as it stands today. It is also called Al-Haram El-Sharif (the Nobel Sanctuary). The Dome of the Chain marks the exact central point of this Mosque.
Al-Aqsa Mosque holds up to 400,000 worshippers at one time, bearing in mind that the space required for each person is roughly 0.8m x 0.5m to enable the submissive kneeling in prayer. On Fridays at noon, during the fasting month of Ramadan, and particularly the 27th of Ramadan (Lailat El-Qadr), the area is filled to virtual capacity.
There are 11 gates to Al-Aqsa Mosque: 7 of which are open. Of the 4 closed gates, one is the Golden Gate.
Al-Aqsa Mosque MinaretIndications of any Muslim mosque the World over is the thin spiral minaret which always immediately adjoins the Mosque wall. Minarets are used to call Muslims to prayer five times a day, seven days a week throughout the year. At Al-Aqsa Mosque, there are four minarets: 3 square and 1 cylindrical from the Mamluk period.
There are no minarets on the Eastern side of Al-Aqsa Mosque because there were no inhabitants and thus no-one to call to prayer. After all, it was not till the late nineteenth century that Jerusalem began to expand outside the city walls.
Al-Aqsa is made up of 3 parts, narrow arcades run along one end, a huge atrium and a covered area at the south.
Running alongside the arcades are several family burial sites (maqamat). These persons contributed to the schools and charities in the vicinity of the Mosque run by the Supreme Muslim Council.
The atrium of Al-Aqsa Mosque is an oasis of peace and tranquillity inside a walled city of hustle and bustle. It has trees, lawns, fountains, the beautiful Shrine of the Dome of the Rock, small domed rooms and structures which are rooms for scholars, sheikhs and religious court offices, and a museum.
Before Muslims pray, they are required to go through a ritual ablution. There are manuablution areas, but the Cup is one of the oldest and most photographed fountains on the Mosque grounds.
In the center of the southern end of the atrium is the covered area of Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Mihrab (niche showing direction of prayer) of the Mosque is located here. Al-Aqsa building (recognizable by its lead dome), was originally built nearly 1300 years ago by Muslim Caliph Al-Walid the son of AbdulMalek bin Marwan in 709 AD.
Throughout its history, Al-Aqsa was subject to successive restoration work due to damages caused by earthquakes, etc. The building now has the central nave and 6 aisles (the original covered area had 14 aisles).
The covered area of Al-Aqsa Mosque is a very simple, but large and imposing, rectangular structure. It has an area of 3500 square meters, and holds up to 5000 Muslims at prayer at one time. The Qibla facing south towards Mecca and the Rock within the Dome of the Rock are on the same central line.
There are 7 large gates to enter the Mosque's covered area, as well as 1 single door on both the eastern and western sides. There are over 100 clear and colored glass windows, 14 Arches, 27 Italian Marble columns on the eastern side, and the equivalent number of stone piers on the western side.
The outer dome was covered with Lead in 1985 replacing the Aluminum dome of 1964 in order to restore it to its original cover.
The inner dome, decorated with stucco work, dates back to the 13th century.

In accordance with Muslim tradition, men and women are permitted to pray within the covered area but in different sections, 3 times a day. The remaining two daily prayers as well as Friday noon prayers, Al-Aqsa is for men only. The covered part of Al-Aqsa Mosque was converted to a Knight's Hostel in part, and Chapel in part during the Crusader period. Restoration of Islamic atmosphere was done by Salahuddin Al-Ayyoubi.
In 1969, after 2 years of Israeli occupation, a fanatic Jew set fire to the covered area for the first time in its history. Repairing the damage from the fire still continues. Among the numerous sad losses was the beautiful handmade pulpit from Aleppo. It was a gift from Salahuddin Al-Ayyoubi and stood near the Mihrab (niche) in Al-Aqsa Mosque. This Pulpit, considered one of the most beautiful in the World, was made of over 10,000 interlocking pieces of Cedar and other wood, Ivory and mother of pearl affixed without a drop of glue or a single nail. A remaining section of this Pulpit is among the various artifacts on display at the Islamic Museum, in the southern corner of the Noble Sanctuary.
The restoration of the subterranean Marwani Musallah (praying place) was completed in 1996. It is 4000 square meters, and was tiled in a brief 2 months entirely by volunteers. The Marwani Musallah is mistakenly believed by some to be the site of King Solomon's stables, however its construction is actually entirely 8th century Umayyad.
In the middle of the 19th century Al-Aqsa Mosque was opened for Non-Muslim visitors. For Non-Muslims, the Mosque is open during fixed times on weekday mornings and afternoons on payment of an entrance fees. The Mosque is closed to Non-Muslims on Fridays throughout the year and all Muslim holidays.
Although in the past, everyone entered Al-Aqsa Mosque without shoes, now Muslims and tourists alike are permitted to enter Al-Aqsa with shoes. Shoes however, have to be removed to enter the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa's enclosed area as a sign of cleanliness and respect. Cameras likewise, are permitted in Al-Aqsa Mosque, but not inside any building. Visitors should ensure they are modestly dressed with arms and legs covered. Ladies should have a scarf to cover their hair. While on holy ground, intimate or personal contact must be avoided.
