#GazaUnderAttack #US Confirms it Resupplied Israel with Weapons During #Gaza Conflict

A huge fireball erupts following Israeli air strikes in the east of Gaza City(Reuters)
The US has confirmed it resupplied Israel with weapons and ammunition which could be used during the conflict in Gaza.
The news comes soon after the US condemned an attack on a United Nations (UN) school in Gaza in which at least 16 Palestinians were killed.
Since the 1990s, the US has kept a stockpile of arms inside Israel known as the War Reserves Stock Allies-Israel (WRSA-I), which Israel can use in emergencies.

#FreeGaza #FreePalestine #BDS #Israel facing new divestment support in US

Human rights and corporate responsibility prompt a US church to divest from companies doing business with Israel.

Last updated: 24 Jul 2014

Rights groups warn that sales of Caterpillar bulldozers to Israel could violate Palestinians' human rights [GALLO/GETTY]

The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which aims to pressure Israel to comply with international law and end its military occupation of Palestinian territories, has garnered significant institutional and governmental support in recent years.

Much of its growth has been in Europe, but the BDS movement is also gaining momentum in mainstream USA.

The Presbyterian Church (USA) voted in June to divest from three companies doing business with Israel: Caterpillar, Motorola Solutions, and Hewlett-Packard.

The three were targeted for selling equipment used to facilitate Israel’s illegal activities on occupied land, highlighting yet again the question of corporate responsibility regarding international law and human rights.

Palestinian-American denied entry into Israel, told “There’s no such thing as #Palestine” | #StopIsrael

I’ve spent my entire life hearing stories about Jerusalem and the beauty of my homeland from my mother and grandparents. I had always dreamed of one day being able to visit, and in the summer of 2012 it seemed that I would finally have that opportunity. In September of that year I started my travels with 30 peers on a student diplomatic trip through the Middle East. I knew that I would likely face some trouble at the Israeli borders due to my Palestinian background, however what I experienced turned out to be far more than just a little “trouble”.

Yara Karmalawy (image by mondoweiss.net)
On September 13th, 30 of my peers and myself, made our way from Amman, Jordan to the Jordan River Crossing, the international border between Israel and Jordan. We lined up single file to go through baggage check, and have our passports checked by a young soldier who couldn’t be over the age of 25. I watched as several of my peers handed their bags and passports over and were quickly moved along. There seemed to be no trouble. As I approached the soldier and handed him my own passport, he read my name and automatically asked me to step aside. I obliged, wondering and worrying why I hadn’t been let through as easily as my friends who I could now see collecting their luggage and heading back to the bus. I waited patiently as I watched my passport be handed around from soldier to soldier, each reading my name out loud then conversing among each other in Hebrew.
Eventually one of the soldiers took my passport to the back and handed it to a young lady behind a glass window. I watched her inspect the passport and vigorously type my information into the computer screen in front of her. After about 35 minutes of her “research” on me, she called me over to her window, and proceeded to question me.
“What is the purpose of your visit to Israel?”
“I am on a student diplomatic trip with the University of California school system”
“Where are your mother and father from?”
“My father is Egyptian, and my mother is Palestinian” I noticed her smirk when I said the word Palestinian.
“Where are they now?”
“In California, where they live”
“Do you have family here in Israel?”
“No, but I have family in Palestine”
“So your mother is a Palestinian and you think that you can come to Israel?”
“Yes”
“You are not allowed to enter here because you have a Palestinian I.D.”
“No, I do not, I am an American citizen. I wasn’t born in Palestine, nor have I ever lived there”

America and Israel: Imperial Partners in Crime

By Stephen Lendman

Longstanding ties remain firm. Both nations are imperial partners. Naked aggression is official policy. Regime change in Syria is planned. Daily events head inexorably toward full-scale intervention.

mwcnews.net
The latest incident ups the stakes. On May 4, The New York Times headlined "Israel Bombs Syria as the US Weighs Its Own Options," saying:
An unnamed US official said "Israel bombed a target in Syria overnight Thursday. (Washington) consider(s its own) military options, including carrying out (its) own air-strikes."
According to Reuters, "(t)he attack took place on Friday after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet approved it in a secret meeting on Thursday night…."
These type meetings often precede imminent action. They're held to approve them.
CNN's Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr said "(t)he United States believes Israel has conducted an air-strike into Syria, two US officials tell CNN."
"US and Western intelligence agencies are reviewing classified data showing Israel most likely conducted a strike in the Thursday-Friday time frame, according to both officials."
"This is the same time frame that the US collected additional data showing Israel was flying a high number of warplanes over Lebanon."
An unnamed Israeli military source said "(w)e will do whatever is necessary to stop the transfer of weapons from Syria to terrorist organizations. We have done it in the past and we will do it if necessary the future."
Pretexts are easy to create. Washington and Israel do so to justify crimes of war and against humanity.
According to the NYT, "(t)he target was not a Syrian chemical weapons facility…." The same unnamed US official said a building was struck.
Lebanon's Daily Star said "(e)ight Israeli warplanes violated Lebanon's airspace in a span of 14 hours, flying over large swarths of the country, Army officials announced Friday."
Israeli military aircraft do so almost daily. This time was different. Lebanese overflights were "unusually high." At 7PM local time, they began.
Two Israeli warplanes entered Lebanese airspace west of Sidon. They "conducted aerial maneuvers." They left four hours later.
"Ten minutes" before they departed, "another two warplanes entered entered" Lebanese airspace "west of Jounieh." More maneuvers followed. They returned to Israel after midnight.
"At 12:35 AM, another sortie of two warplanes entered Lebanese airspace" near Beirut. They also conducted maneuvers. They left before 3:15 AM.
"At 6 AM, two more warplanes" overflew overflew "all Lebanese regions." They left at 8:50 AM.

EMERGENCY DEMOS: STOP THE ATTACK ON GAZA NOW!

Posted by Zahi Damuni (cause leader)
Tell your friends about this
STOP THE ATTACKS ON GAZA NOW!
BREAK THE SIEGE OF GAZA NOW!
END THE OCCUPATION OF ALL OF PALESTINE!
IMPLEMENT PALESTINIAN RIGHT TO RETURN!

Al-Awda The Palestine Right to Return Coalition calls on its members and all supporting organizations and individuals to organize demonstrations in front of Israeli Embassies and Consulates, Federal and other locations to demand an end to the ongoing Israeli aggression and siege of the Gaza Strip.

On November 9, 2012 Israel's army killed a teenage child playing soccer in Gaza and then launched an unprovoked bombardment of the Gaza Strip which killed seven Palestinians and injured more than 40, and to which the resistance responded. Subsequent Israeli attacks led to more deaths and injuries and culminated today in the assassination of Ahmed Jabri, second in command of Military Wing of Hamas and nine other people throughout Gaza. Further, Israel formally announced that it has launched a ground invasion of the Gaza strip, saying they'll be in Tal Alhawa within 24 hours. This is an area in the middle of densely populated Gaza City.

We call on all people of conscience to organize emergency demonstrations and demand Israel immediately stop its attacks on Gaza. We also demand that the Israeli and Egyptian governments immediately END THE SIEGE OF THE GAZA STRIP and grant immediate access to all food, humanitarian and medical relief supplies without restriction. The strip is home to 1.5 million Palestinians, 80% of whom are refugees denied by the Zionist state the right to return to their homes and lands of origin from which they were expelled by the Zionist occupation in 1948 and thereafter. Nearly half of the Gaza population are children who along with the elderly and ill remain completely deprived of food, water, fuel, electricity, humanitarian relief and medical supplies or facilities.

Momentum Builds for U.S. Investigation of Israel's Killing of Rachel Corrie

National Orgs. Launch Open Letter for U.S. Investigation of Israel’s Injuring & Killing of Americans

Dear Milena,
Rachel Corrie Photo
Rachel Corrie
Earlier this week, Cindy and Craig Corrie accepted the prestigious 2012 LennonOno Grant for Peace on behalf of their daughter, Rachel, who was killed by the Israeli military with a Caterpillar D9 bulldozer as she nonviolently attempted to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian home in the Gaza Strip in March 2003.
In accepting the award, Cindy stated that Rachel’s
“hope would be that it could somehow contribute to bringing people together to work passionately for justice, and to do so with the utmost respect for the rights and lives of all human beings.”
However, nearly ten years after Rachel’s killing, her family still has not received justice. In August 2012, a civil case against the Israeli military filed by the Corrie family concluded with the presiding judge not only absolving the State of Israel of any liability, but also blaming Rachel for her own death. This is unacceptable.
Together with our friends at the Center for Constitutional Rights(CCR), we launched last month a petition to the State Department calling on “the U.S. government to conduct thorough, credible, and transparent investigations into the death of Rachel Corrie and into each case involving the death or serious injury of an American citizen by the Israeli military since 2001.”
Already, we’ve collected more than 9,000 signatures.
You can also tweet the petition and share it on your Facebook page.
We plan on delivering these petition signatures to the State Department later this month. Be sure that we include your signature by signing today!
To bolster our efforts, the US Campaign and CCR have joined with prominent national organizations in our coalition, including theAmerican-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, American Muslims for Palestine, CODEPINK: Women for Peace, Friends of Sabeel—North America, Interfaith Peace-Builders, Jewish Voice for Peace, and Peace Action in launching a similar organizational sign-on letter.
You can read the full-text of the letter here. If you are authorized to endorse the letter on behalf of an organization, then we invite you to do so.
A U.S. investigation into Israel’s killing of Rachel Corrie, along with Israel’s injuring and killing of other Americans, would be the first step toward accountability and justice for these U.S. human rights defenders.
Help make this possible by taking action today.
Sincerely,

Josh Ruebner, National Advocacy Director

No More Applause

By Cecilie Surasky, Deputy Director of Jewish Voice for Peace, a US Campaign member organization
May 26, 2011

I was stunned to see that our entire U.S. Congress gave Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu 29 standing ovations on Tuesday. Twenty-nine. Unbelievable, given what his speech contained.

The speech that Netanyahu gave that day will go down in history as an extraordinary embarrassment to Americans and Israelis alike. Read on to find out what he said and why we cannot let it go unanswered.
To put it simply, Netanyahu proved yet again that he prefers settlement expansion and Jewish domination of Palestinians to any kind of true peace agreement that would benefit both peoples. He claimed that Israel isn’t occupying anyone—ignoring nearly 44 years of increasingly brutal Israeli control over the lives of millions of Palestinians.

He stated that Israel had no need for American military assistance—ignoring the $3 billion in military equipment and aid the U.S. provides Israel each year. He said Israel supports the desire of Arab peoples to live free—saying nothing about the ongoing Israeli shootings and arrests of Palestinians who nonviolently protest for their right to be free. (1)

What makes this so outrageous is that Netanyahu’s speech found a shockingly sympathetic audience in the U.S. Congress while people like you and me could only watch in disbelief.

I’ve had it. I cannot stand by and watch my member of Congress applaud this man and his litany of distortions, myths and outright fabrications.
Please, I urge you to join me in writing your US Representative to say, “How could you? Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has shown repeatedly that he is not interested in a viable future for either Palestinians or Israelis and you rewarded him with 29 standing ovations as the world watched."

U.S. Announces Sanctions Against Israeli Company

Although clearly this news has nothing to do with our movement to end U.S. support for Israeli occupation and apartheid -- which we pursue partly through boycott-divestment-and-sanctions campaigns -- still it might serve as a useful answer to anyone who claims that we cannot boycott or sanction Israel.

By Isabel Kershner
May 26, 2011

JERUSALEM -- Even as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was praising the United States in a speech on Tuesday for imposing tougher sanctions on Iran for its nuclear activities, the State Department announced that it was imposing sanctions on a leading Israeli company, Ofer Brothers Group, for activities supporting Iran’s energy sector.

While the State Department’s decision caused Israel considerable embarrassment, it was the timing that created the greatest stir. It came soon after Mr. Netanyahu’s friction with Mr. Obama over using the 1967 borders as a basis for solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“Nobody wants to over-interpret the choice of timing,” said an Israeli official who was speaking on the condition of anonymity for diplomatic reasons, “but there was no objective reason for the State Department to come out with the announcement on that precise day.”

“Does this carry meaning? I am unable to tell you. But you cannot blame anybody for being suspicious,” he said.

The Obama administration dismissed any connection between the sanctions and Mr. Netanyahu’s visit. “These sanctions take months” to work through the Department of Treasury’s vetting process, a senior administration official said. “There is a process.”

Still, the awkward fact remains that a corporation owned by one of Israel’s most prominent business families has been blacklisted for dealings, however indirect, with Iran.

Rice: Israel’s legitimacy ‘beyond dispute'

The US Campaign has tried to fight this outcome through the petition drive we launched a week ago. You can still sign the petition here.

By Jordana Horn -- Jerusalem Post

Envoy to UN says US will continue "frontal opposition" to attempts to "chip away at Israel's legitimacy."

NEW YORK – In an address given at the World Affairs Council in Portland, Oregon, on Friday evening, US Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice pledged American loyalty to Israel at the UN, saying that "efforts to chip away at Israel's legitimacy will continue to be met by the frontal opposition of the United States."

"Many others lament that the UN is too focused on singling out Israel," Rice said. "On that, they're right. UN members devote disproportionate attention to Israel and consistently adopt biased resolutions, which too often divert attention from the world's most egregious human rights abuses."

Rice works at her job, she said, to "ensure that Israel's legitimacy is beyond dispute and its security is never in doubt."

Rice said the United States has been "blunt about the deep flaws of the Goldstone Report and the Human Rights Council's inquiry into the tragic flotilla episode."

"We'll keep fighting to ensure that Israel has the same rights and responsibilities as all states – including membership in all appropriate regional groupings at the UN."

The U.S. needs to get tough with Israel

Yousef Munayyer, executive director of the Palestine Center in Washington, DC, has written an important op-ed in the Los Angeles Times challenging the Obama administration to get tougher with Israel or be regarded as irrelevant to the conflict's resolution by much of the rest of the world. The piece also highlights the unhelpful role of Rep. Howard L. Berman (D-California).
This is an excellent opportunity to let the LA Times know that you'd like to see more such commentary. Please write your letter to the editor today, particularly if you are in the Los Angeles area. Letters can be sent toletters@latimes.com and should be 150 words or shorter. Include your full name, mailing address, daytime phone number, and e-mail address. The recent settlement freeze debacle shows the U.S. cannot proceed with its all-carrot, no-stick policy toward Israel if it wants to see a change in its behavior.

By Yousef Munayyer
December 22, 2010

When diplomatic sources revealed that the United States was abandoning efforts for an Israeli settlement freeze, many surely did not know whether to laugh or cry. The first two years of U.S.-Israeli relations under the Obama administration has been a debacle. For the next two, what is learned from that failure, and how it's applied, will be of utmost importance.

The failure to get a freeze is not only about the settlements — a colonial enterprise expanding on occupied Palestinian territory that a new Human Rights Watch report called a "two-tier system" that is both "separate and unequal"— but also a test of America's commitment to evenhanded mediation. So-called core issues, including the return of Palestinian refugees and the disposition of Jerusalem, are every bit as difficult as the settlements, maybe more. But obtaining the freeze was a tone-setter, one that would have shown that the U.S. could fairly enforce obligations by both parties.

This didn't happen. Instead, during the earlier, temporary 10-month freeze, the Israeli settlements were still being expanded — only new-home construction was frozen — and settlements around Jerusalem were accelerated.

US urged to recognize Palestinian state

Chief Palestinian Authority negotiator Saeb Erekat

The Palestinian Authority has called for the US recognition of an independent Palestinian state in response to Israel's refusal to stop settlement expansion on the occupied Palestinian territories.

Chief Palestinian Authority (PA) negotiator Saeb Erekat expressed hope on Wednesday that Washington recognizes a free and independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.

Erekat made the remarks after the US admitted that it had failed to convince Israel to renew its partial settlement freeze in the occupied West Bank, which is the Palestinian side's main precondition for returning to talks.

"We hope that the American administration would recognize the Palestinian state within the 1967 borders as a response to Israel's settlement diktats and other unilateral measures," Erekat was quoted as saying by AFP in Cairo.

"Decisions are needed and if the United States wants to safeguard the two-state solution it must recognize the Palestinian state within the 1967 borders," he added.

Over the course of the past week, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay have all sent letters to Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas, declaring that they recognize a free and independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.

More than 100 states around the world recognize Palestine.

Israel has protested the recent recognitions, claiming that the move is against the spirit of the Middle East talks and that a Palestinian state should only be established through dialogue.

Vote Today -- To Stop Israel from Getting CAT Bulldozers

Dear Milena,

Today is Election Day, and we strongly urge you to exercise your democratic right to vote!
Elections are important, but your vote today is only one step in the process of influencing our country's decision-making.

Either before or after you head to the polls today, here's something else you can
quickly do to help shape our country's policies for the better: click here.

Israeli Caterpillar D9 at workLast Thursday we let you know about a milestone in our ongoing campaign to hold Caterpillar, Israel and the United States accountable for human rights abuses Israel commits with CAT bulldozers, purchased at U.S. taxpayer expense as U.S. military aid.

According to Israeli news media, Caterpillar has temporarily delayed its delivery to Israel of tens of D9 bulldozers, the same type that the Israeli military used to kill U.S. peace activist Rachel Corrie in March, 2003, as she nonviolently attempted to stop the demolition of a Palestinian home in the Gaza Strip.

As weapons that the U.S. taxpayer paid for, in the form of
military aid to Israel, bulldozer deliveries must be approved by the Obama Administration. We have a narrow window of opportunity to pressure the Obama Administration to make this temporary measure permanent.

Here's how you can help:

  1. Stop CaterpillarJoin more than 10,000 others who have signed our petition to President Obama, asking him to stop all deliveries of bulldozers to Israel.  Help us reach our new goal of 15,000 signatures before we deliver them to the Obama Administration later this week.

  2. If you belong to an organization, please ask it to endorse our organizational sign-on letter to the Obama Administration, calling on it to stop all deliveries of bulldozers to Israel.  More than 75 local and national organizations have signed already. Help us reach 100 endorsements by tomorrow evening (Wednesday) when we close the letter for endorsements.  Read the letter, view the organizational endorsements, and add your organization's name.

  3. Spread the word about this campaign by telling a friend, forwarding this email, and embedding the graphic above on your web site, blog, or social networking profile.
Thank you for making your voice heard as a citizen, today and beyond!

American tax dollars got a real workout last week--so why is the military aid check still so fat?

Just to state the obvious--this past week has put U.S. complicity in war crimes and acts of aggression committed by the Israeli military on display once again. Just a few examples of how hard your tax money was working this past week to violate human rights:

1) The attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla killed 9 Turkish nationals, one of whom was a U.S. citizen of Turkish origin. (National staff of the US Campaign participated in a delegation to the Turkish Embassy in Washington, DC to express condolences for those who were killed in the attack).

The United States has provided the Israeli navy and air force with weapons through Foreign Military Financing (FMF) budget allocations that were, or may have been, used in this attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. According to the Jerusalem Post, the Israel Air Force used three Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters to transport its commandos to the ships. The Israel Air Force is reported to have 49 of these combat helicopters.

In addition, the United States has transferred additional weapons to the Israeli Navy that may have been used in violation of the AECA during its attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. In July 2008, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DCSA) notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Israel of four littoral combat ships (LCS-I variant), associated equipment, and services valued at up to $1.9 billion. The Israeli Navy is also reported to have three Sa’ar 5-class corvettes built in the United States. Press reports also indicate that Israel may have used U.S. guns, ammunition, night vision goggles, and crowd dispersal weapons in its attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla.

All of this has led Dr. Peter Bourne, a former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, to call on the U.S. State Department to investigate possible violations of the Arms Export Control Act in the flotilla attack.

2) Emily Henochowicz, a dual U.S. and Israeli citizen, was shot in the face while protesting the Gaza Freedom Flotilla massacre at the Qalandia Checkpoint in the West Bank. She has lost an eye and had to have facial reconstruction urgery performed in a Jerusalem hospital before returning home. The Obama Administration has demanded that Israel investigate the incident (because the Israeli military is so good at investigating itself...ugh).

The high-velocity tear-gas canister which injured Emily Henochowicz was likely of U.S. origin as well: in FY2007 alone, the US gave Israel 121,991 pieces of teargas and riot control agents valued at $1,654,536.

(The Steering Committee of the US Campaign has sent a letter to Emily expressing our support and "strongest solidarity...in this time of pain, recovery and healing.")

3) Meanwhile, Israeli military attacks on the Gaza Strip continued. Five Palestinians were killed a day after the flotilla massacre, and this morning the Israeli military killed four 150 yards off of the shore of the Gaza Strip. These killings, like the killings of nonviolent Palestinian activists such as Ahmad Dib and Basem Abu Rahme, received little attention in U.S. media.
That's a lot of (ugly) work for your tax money. But you've got to wonder--with a workout like that, why is the check still so fat?

Find out more about U.S. military aid to Israel and how you can work to end it by clicking here.
