Continuing the legacy of Rachel Corrie
![]() The Rachel Corrie Foundation marks the 10th anniversary of Rachel's death

Staying educated can be as simple as watching a movie, such as the award-winning films 5 Broken Cameras or Budrus. Both cover the nonviolent resistance efforts in the West Bank and are conveniently available on Netflix.
Prefer to read? Learn the history of the conflict with Ilan Pappe's The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, available for instant download on kindle. Stay current with Ben Ehrenreich's article in the NYTimes, Is This Where the Third Intifada Will Start? and Joseph Levine's On Questioning the Jewish State.
In Rachel's words, "The international media and our government are not going to tell us that we are effective, important, justified in our work, courageous, intelligent, valuable. We have to do that for each other, and one way we can do that is by continuing our work, visibly." So let us now work together, stay educated and involved, and value each other's work, to bring about justice in Palestine.
In loving solidarity,
CODEPINK
P.S.- Find an event near you to commemorate Rachel Corrie's stand in Gaza, or create your own event and submit it to the Rachel Corrie Foundation.

Subtitle: Take Action as Israel Escalates Attacks on Gaza
Dear Milena,
Today, Israel launched a major offensive in the Gaza Strip, killing the Hamas leader nearby civilians, including two girls under the age of five. The death toll continues to rise. The US Campaign strongly condemns these brutal attacks, carried out with U.S. weapons given to Israel as military aid and paid for by U.S. taxpayers, and Israel's ongoing, illegal siege of Gaza. You can follow updates from Gaza here.
Please act now and call on the Obama administration to exert diplomatic pressure on Israel to bring about an immediate cease-fire and to initiate an investigation of Israel's misuse of U.S. weapons against Palestinians in this and previous attacks.

White House: 202-456-1111
State Department: 202-647-6575
As Israeli attacks on Palestinians in Gaza heighten, activists in the United States are taking action. Yesterday, the Associated Students of the University of California at Irvine voted unanimously in support of divestment from companiesthat profit from Israeli occupation and apartheid. The US Campaign congratulates Irvine Divest for its hard work on this principled action, in line with a tradition of campus campaigns leading the way in social justice struggles throughout history.
Among the companies mentioned in the resolution were Caterpillar and Hewlett Packard -- targets of multiple, recent faith-based initiatives and victories following years of work by US Campaign member groups, including the Palestine Israel Action Group of the Ann Arbor Friends Meeting, United Methodist Kairos Response, and the Israel-Palestine Mission Network.
In two historic resolutions this year, the United Methodist andPresbyterian churches voted to boycott products produced in Israeli settlements, including SodaStream, a device that makes carbonated water and soda from tap water, made primarily in the illegal Israeli settlement of Mishor Adumin. SodaStream's illegal activities were also highlighted in this week's UC Irvine resolution.

SodaStream is being promoted widely this holiday season at such outlets as Costco, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Macy's. In response, many US Campaign member groups -- both faith-basedand non-faith-based -- are supporting a Boycott SodaStream Day of Action on "Black Friday,"the day after Thanksgiving and the biggest shopping day of the year.

There are many ways to take action on NEXT FRIDAY, November 23rd (Black Friday):
1. Write or call. Generate letters/petitions or calls from individuals, congregations, or groups to one or more stores and their corporate offices. Reference any ethics/responsible business practice policies they may have. Click here for sample letters, store contacts, and links to ethics policies.
2. Store visits. Go in groups or individually to selected stores to talk to management about not carrying SodaStream. Fill out comment cards to that effect. Most store managers have no information at all about the occupation of Palestine. A visit is a good way to share information. Click here for sample handouts and other materials.
3. Hold a vigil, prayer vigil, informational leafleting, etc. at a local mall or in front of a chain or chain stores that sell SodaStream. This can be effective even with a few people (though be aware that store security guards and local authorities have been known to approach, antagonize, and even arrest vigilers). Click here for sample signs and leaflets.
4. Tweet! Use the hashtags #SodaStream and #BDS to generate interest in your Tweets. Post information on your own or your group's Facebook page.
Please send photos and report-backs to the US Campaign by clicking here so we know what you did!
Students in Gaza, in spite of everything, remain steadfast, recently launching Gaza's first campus-based boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaign. In solidarity with the students and people of Gaza, and inspired by UC Irvine's recent divestment decision involving SodaStream, member groups are planning actions from Sacramento (building on the recent de-shelving of SodaStream from a major local store) to Washington, D.C. Join them in taking action next Friday in your local community!
Yours,

Anna Baltzer
National Organizer
P.S. -- On Friday, we will be delivering our open letter and petition to the State Department calling on the United States to investigate Israel’s killing of Rachel Corrie in the Gaza Strip and its injuring and killing of additional U.S. human rights defenders. You can still have your signature delivered to the State Department if you sign before 4pm Eastern tomorrow.

Momentum Builds for U.S. Investigation of Israel's Killing of Rachel Corrie
National Orgs. Launch Open Letter for U.S. Investigation of Israel’s Injuring & Killing of Americans
Dear Milena,
![]() Rachel Corrie |
In accepting the award, Cindy stated that Rachel’s
“hope would be that it could somehow contribute to bringing people together to work passionately for justice, and to do so with the utmost respect for the rights and lives of all human beings.”
However, nearly ten years after Rachel’s killing, her family still has not received justice. In August 2012, a civil case against the Israeli military filed by the Corrie family concluded with the presiding judge not only absolving the State of Israel of any liability, but also blaming Rachel for her own death. This is unacceptable.
Together with our friends at the Center for Constitutional Rights(CCR), we launched last month a petition to the State Department calling on “the U.S. government to conduct thorough, credible, and transparent investigations into the death of Rachel Corrie and into each case involving the death or serious injury of an American citizen by the Israeli military since 2001.”
Already, we’ve collected more than 9,000 signatures.
You can also tweet the petition and share it on your Facebook page.
We plan on delivering these petition signatures to the State Department later this month. Be sure that we include your signature by signing today!
To bolster our efforts, the US Campaign and CCR have joined with prominent national organizations in our coalition, including theAmerican-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, American Muslims for Palestine, CODEPINK: Women for Peace, Friends of Sabeel—North America, Interfaith Peace-Builders, Jewish Voice for Peace, and Peace Action in launching a similar organizational sign-on letter.
You can read the full-text of the letter here. If you are authorized to endorse the letter on behalf of an organization, then we invite you to do so.
A U.S. investigation into Israel’s killing of Rachel Corrie, along with Israel’s injuring and killing of other Americans, would be the first step toward accountability and justice for these U.S. human rights defenders.
Help make this possible by taking action today.
Sincerely,

Josh Ruebner, National Advocacy Director

Take Action: Free imprisoned Palestinian farmers and agricultural workers
Take Action: Free Palestinian farmers and agricultural workers targeted for imprisonment
As they organize to defend their land and Palestinian farming against the onslaught of settlements and siege, Palestinian agricultural workers and organizers have been subject to an intensified arrest campaign in the occupied West Bank of Palestine. Click here to sign our petition at change.org or sign on here to demand an immediate end to the targeting of the Union of Agricultural Work Committees and all Palestinian farmers and agricultural workers, and the freedom of the Palestinian organizers imprisoned for defending their rights.
A number of staff of the Union of Agricultural Work Committees (Facebook), a Palestinian grassroots organization that organizes Palestinian farmers to defend their land and develop their products, have been targeted in recent days for arrest by Israeli occupation forces.
![]() |
| Dr. Moayad Bisharat |
This is the most recent in a series of arrests of UAWC activists in recent weeks, including the Director of Development and Operations, the engineer Fuad Abu Saif on July 26 in an early morning raid on his home in Hebron, in which his computer, mobile phone and other communication devices were seized. The director of the UAWC Jericho office, Mohammad Nujoom was abducted on July 16 as he re-entered Palestine from abroad. Both were taken to the Moskobiya compound for interrogation. On July 31, Dr. Moayad Ahmad Bisharat, the coordinator of UAWC’s Jericho office was abducted at dawn from his home. The UAWC office in Jericho was then ransacked by Israeli forces, who confiscated the computers, laptops, and files of the organization.
In addition, UAWC Board Member Ahmad Soufan, held in administrative detention for one year, was recently ordered into a third term of six months in arbitrary administrative detention without charge or trial. Two other UAWC leaders, Abdel Razzak Farraj, administrative and financial director, and Board member Dr. Yousef Abdul Haq, were both finally released from administrative detention after multiple renewals of their imprisonment.
![]() |
| Engineer Fuad Abu Saif |
As the UAWC noted in its statement on the arrests, these arrests are part and parcel of the ongoing attacks on Palestinians’ right to the land, including massive settlement building, land confiscation, home demolitions, and the construction of the apartheid wall, as well as the siege and firing on farmers and agricultural workers in Gaza. The UAWC called on international organizers to defend Palestinian national rights and demand the freedom of the UAWC detainees and all Palestinian prisoners.
UAWC, which recently marked its 25th anniversity, has been struggling with Palestinian farmers and agricultural workers to defend and develop their land, support Palestinian agricultural projects, and support farmers’ steadfastness on the land in the face of Israeli occupation and aggression.
The attack on the UAWC is part of the overall attack on Palestinian farmers and agricultural workers, from olive farmers whose trees are set ablaze by settlers, tthose whose land was stolen for settlements, “military use,” or “buffer zones”, to the fishers of Gaza, who daily brave military attack for seeking to fish in their sea. It reflects the over 64 years of occupation, land theft, displacement and dispossession of the occupation of Palestine. Farmers and agricultural workers are on the front lines of resistance as they struggle to remain on their land – and are thus being targeted for arrest and imprisonment in an attempt to undermine the steadfastness of the farmers.
Western governments, including those of the United States and Canada, are not only silent in the face of these attacks, they are directly complicit, as they pledge expanded military support and allegiance to Israel as its occupation, apartheid and human rights violations continue and escalate. It is urgent that people make their own voices heard to challenge and break this complicity.
TAKE ACTION!
1. Click here to sign our petition at change.org, or sign on here! This petition will be presented to Israeli embassies in the US, Canada and other countries on Wednesday, August 15, demanding the release of these prisoners, justice for all prisoners, and an end to the attack on Palestinian farmers and agricultural workers. Individual and organizational signatories are welcome – we particularly urge groups and organizations to sign on to and distribute the petition. If you experience any difficulty signing on, please send your endorsement to samidoun@samidoun.ca.
2. Boycott Israeli goods and agricultural products! The Palestinian movement has called for boycott, divestment and sanctions targeting Israeli goods and institutions until it ends its violations of Palestinian rights. Israeli oranges, organic peppers, dates, and other agricultural products are the fruits of stolen land. Boycott those products and help to raise awareness in your community!
3. Support Palestinian agricultural products, including olive oil, spices, and maftoul, farmed by Palestinian farmers and not occupation settlements.
4. Join a protest or demonstration outside an Israeli consulate for Palestinian prisoners. Many groups and organizations are holding events – join one or announce your own. Organizing an event, action or forum on Palestinian prisoners on your city or campus? Use this form to contact us and we will post the event widely. If you need suggestions, materials or speakers for your event, please contact us at samidoun@samidoun.ca.
5. Help to support UAWC – here is information on how you can donate to support UAWC’s much needed work among Palestinian farmers and fishers.

Greetings to every free and noble spirit,
since 1948 ,the policy of detention or captivity, used by the Israeli occupation to subjugate the Palestinian people and forces them to shrink in front of the machine of oppression which aims to humiliate prisoners and their families and deform their patriotism and their humanity, and then break the morale of an entire people, is considered one of the fiercely repressive policies.
The number of Palestinian prisoners who have been arrested since 1967 until now, reached more than 800,000 prisoners, a figure that represents more than 25% of the Palestinian people.
The prisoners often struggled to gain their freedom, they had a lot of sacrifices and martyrs, and its time to talk on behalf of their names and express their demands to the world.
so it was the launch of the project: "I am human" under the slogan "Raising Voice .... living soul"
by our center at Sana Al-Quds, which is a part of the Committee of Palestine for Charity in Kuwait, which aims to collect one million signatures on a document containing the human claims of prisoners, which is guaranteed in law International Geneva Conventions and the United Nations, and then deliver it to the European Network for the rights of Palestinian prisoners (UFREE Network) and other international institutions,
which in return, communicate with various international organizations of human rights that sponsor the issue of Palestinian prisoners and the United Nations General Assembly.

Support the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza
We are writing to ask for your support for the Gaza Freedom Flotilla scheduled to set sail in the second half of June to the besieged Gaza strip. You can help prevent an assault on the nonviolent activists aboard the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza by signing on to our petition. At least ten ships with dignitaries, doctors, professors, artists, journalists, and activists, as well as construction supplies and humanitarian aid, will sail from ports in Europe to Gaza in an act of non-violent civil disobedience to persuade the international community to fulfill its obligations towards the Palestinian people and end Israel's four-year illegal blockade of Gaza.
This is the second, large-scale citizen-to-citizen flotilla to be launched by international grassroots groups. Organized by 14 national groups and international coalitions, the flotilla will carry approximately 1,000 passengers. It will include a US boat named The Audacity of Hope, which will have aboard dozens of dedicated social justice activists. Learn more about the US Boat to Gaza.
The last Freedom Flotilla in May 2010 included seven vessels carrying nearly 700 passengers from 36 different countries. Israeli commandos attacked the boats, shooting and killing nine passengers, injuring over 50 and imprisoning all aboard. This tragedy opened the subject of Gaza on the world stage and put considerable pressure on Israel to ease the draconian siege on Gaza – something the international community had failed to do for 3 years. Learn more about the Free Gaza Movement and support their efforts. We ask you to sign this petition to show the overwhelming public support for an end to siege of Gaza and the rights for Palestinians. We also demand that the American administration apply pressure on Israel to ensure that passengers are not violently attacked and to allow the flotilla to sail to Gaza.

Take Action: Boycott Bibi
When Congress overrode President Ronald Reagan's veto of a bill to impose sanctions against Apartheid South Africa, enacting the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986 into law, the New York Times reported[1] that:
"Senator Richard G. Lugar, the Indiana Republican who heads the Foreign Relations Committee and was the chief sponsor of the measure, appealed in emotional terms to Pretoria to heed the action taken by Congress.
'As a friend of that Government we are sayingwake up!' he said."
'As a friend of that Government we are sayingwake up!' he said."
Members of Congress often declare that the United States is Israel's "best friend." As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin(Bibi) Netanyahu prepares to address a joint meeting of Congress later this month, it is time for us to wake upmembers of Congress and tell them that the United States must end its support for Israeli apartheid against Palestinians.
| Sign our petition to members of Congress demanding they boycott Bibi's address. |
Help us reach our goal of 10,000 signatures this week and we'll personally deliver your signature to House Speaker John Boehner, who invited Netanyahu to address Congress.
Although we haven't yet gained the strength to force the United States to adopt sanctions against Israel for its apartheid practices against Palestinians, we are part of a growing and formidable international movement, taking its lead from Palestinian civil society, that is running successful boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaigns against Israel and corporations that profit from its apartheid policies.
Be a part of this movement by demanding that Congress boycott Bibi's address.
Congress never once invited a leader of Apartheid South Africa to address a joint meeting. Post-apartheid President Nelson Mandela was the first and only South African president to receive this honor.
Netanyahu's address this month to a joint meeting of Congress will be the seventh time an Israeli political leader does so.[2]
Tell your members of Congress that they should boycott Bibi's address.
Netanyahu's address to Congress coincides with the annual policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Join us in Washington, DC, at the US Campaign-endorsed Move Over AIPAC gathering, May 21-24, as we continue to build our movement to end U.S. support for Israeli apartheid.

Organizers of "Israeli Apartheid Week" petition NYC LGBT Center over cancellation of fund-raiser
The New York City coordinating committee of Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) has launched a petition to New York's LGBT Center, in response to the center's sudden decision not to host IAW's March 5 event, "Party to End Apartheid."
The event was to be a benefit for two groups preparing to send another aid ship to Gaza: "Existence is Resistance," and the "Siege Busters Working Group," whose membership includes Emily Henochowicz, a Cooper Union art student who lost an eye while peacefully protesting in the occupied West Bank.
The LGBT Center, which hosts hundreds of diverse events per year, canceled the event after a prominent local right-wing gay activist, Michael Lucas, organized a boycott against it. Lucas is known for his "Men of Israel" films.
IAW's NYC coordinating committee has released a statement in response to the cancellation, and will attempt to collect as many petition signatures as possible.

Take Action: Tell U.S. to Support UN Resolution on Settlements
On Jan. 27, an Israeli settler shot dead Odai Qadous, an 18-year-old shepherd tending his flock of sheep near his West Bank village of Iraq Bourin. The very next day, more than 100 Israeli settlers stormed the West Bank village of Safa; during the melee that ensued, a settler killed 15-year-old Yousef Ekhlil with a gunshot to his head.
As the UN Security Council prepares to debate a resolution on Israel's settlements, the tragic deaths of Odai and Yousef serve as a stark reminder that not only are Israel's 150 settlements in the Palestinian West Bank and East Jerusalemillegal. Not only do they preventPalestinian statehood, freedom and self-determination......Odai and Yousef's killings also remind us that the half million Israeli settlers, protected by the U.S.-equipped Israeli army, are responsible for some of the most egregious human rights abuses suffered by Palestinians day-in and day-out.
The draft Security Council resolution reaffirms that Israel's settlements "are illegal and constitute a major obstacle to the achievement of a just, lasting and comprehensive peace."
We're sure that you agree and want to see the Obama Administration support this resolution.
| Please add your name right now to our petition to the U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, asking her to vote in favor of this resolution. |
One would expect the Obama Administration to support this resolution as the President himself "does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements," as stated in his June 2009 Cairo address.
But instead, the Obama Administration is threatening to use its veto in the Security Council once again to protect Israel from abiding by international law. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated that "New York is not the place to resolve the longstanding conflict and outstanding issues between the Israelis and the Palestinians."
We disagree.
As we argued recently in the LA Times (Good Riddance, 'Peace Process'), the United States is not capable of being an honest broker. A forum such as the UN, anchored in human rights and international law, is exactly the right place to achieve a just and lasting peace.
Let the Obama Administration know that you want our country tosupport the upcoming UN vote condemning Israel's illegal settlements.
If more than 10,000 people sign our petition before the vote, we will hand-deliver it to the U.S. Mission to the UN. Add your voice and help us spread the word now!
As the Obama Administration appears to be supporting human rights in Tunisia and Egypt, and their citizens' demands for freedom, the United States will lose credibility if it vetoes a UN resolution that supports those same rights for Palestinians.
The State Department told us on Human Rights Day last December that "there is a single universal standard that applies to every country, including our own. We apply it to the Israelis, and we also view…Palestinians as being human beings under the Universal Declaration [of Human Rights] and entitled to those rights."
| Sign our petition today and press the United States to live up its word. |
