Scottish Committee for Solidarity with the Arab Revolutions

Last week, representatives of Scotland’s Arab Communities called a demonstration in support of the ongoing revolution in the Arab world. The Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC), and Edinburgh Stop the War Coalition agreed to support the demo.

The demonstration assembles at The Mound in Edinburgh, at 1:30pm on Sat 5th March. (Mound Precinct: map here).

On Monday 28th Feb, at an SPSC public meeting on the Arab revolutions, with speakers from Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, and Palestine, it was agreed that representatives of Scotland’s Arab Communities, along with solidarity groups, set up the Scottish Committee for Solidarity with the Arab Revolutions (SCSAR).

SCSAR had its first meeting on Wed 2nd March 2011, and will meet again on Thursday 10th March. SCSAR seeks further affiliations from the Arab Communities and solidarity groups. Please send your queries to secretary@scottishpsc.org.uk (the SCSAR website and email account will be available soon).
It was understood that a co-ordinated campaign of solidarity was required if the Arab revolutions were not to be stifled by the West; the fact that David Cameron felt able to tour the Middle East with an entourage of arms traders demonstrates that there is currently not enough pressure on him to act ethically.

SCSAR has five main demands:
1. Support for all the Arab revolutions against dictatorship
2. No foreign intervention
3. No arms sales to dictatorships
4. Return the looted billions
5. Freedom for Palestine

Its first act is to organise the 5th March demonstration.
Please download the posters/ flyers, and distribute widely.

Posters and flyers are being hosted on the SPSC website; SCSAR website (www.scsar.org.uk) and email account is being set up, and should be ready by Saturday:

'Boycott Israel Conference: Will Scotland Lead The Way?' 19 March, 10am-5pm
Renfield St Stephen's Church Centre, Bath Street Glasgow
Organised by Scottish Friends of Palestine
2011 is the year of election to the Scottish Parliament.
Can those parties vying to form the next Scottish government be persuaded of the case for action against the state of Israel?  Will Scotland be the first country to announce a boycott of Israel?  In this election year, we must make it known, loud and clear, all of us who support the rights of the Palestinian people, that we are not prepared to see our taxes spent supporting trade with Israel.
Israel's commercial, academic, sporting and cultural relations with other nations provide the state with a veneer of respectability, while it boycotts the rights and the livelihoods of the Palestinian people. The state of Israel must be boycotted.
The speakers at our conference will present the arguments for boycott, disinvestment and sanctions. Please show your support by participating, joining the debate, and spreading the word.
