Dozens of Jewish settlers have attacked a mosque in the city of Jaffa. The attack on Alnozha Mosque took place on Saturday evening (15 January). Palestinian sources in the city said that settlers carrying Israeli flags were roaming the streets after a march; some halted in front of the mosque and threw stones at it while chanting "death to Arabs".
Some of the worshippers inside the mosque at the time confronted the settlers, but Israeli police prevented a violent confrontation by moving the settlers away from the scene. Palestinians have accused the police of "complicity" with the settlers, as they didn't intervene until the settlers were challenged by men from the mosque. Other settlers attacked a Palestinian child near a petrol station in Alnozha Street within sight of police officers, it is claimed.
Sheikh Suleiman Alsatl, the imam of Alnozha Mosque, has threatened to respond to the settlers, "if they continue their provocation". He added his concerns about police complicity in the attack.
